(James) A quick record shot of the female Ring-necked Duck on the river bordering Port Meadow. A presumed escape, but still a nice bird, and I hope to obtain a better photo soon. However, I wondered whether the dirty appearance and distinct lack of white spur pointed to a bit of distant Tufted Duck ancestry...?

(James) A confiding Green Sandpiper at Lower Farm GP's.

(James) A distant record shot of the American Wigeon at Lower Farm GP's, Berkshire.

(Simeon) James and I cuaght up with the Great Grey Shrike on our patch (Denver Sluice) today (29/11/08). Seen in fading light and very misty conditions hance the image quality...

Sunday, November 09, 2008

(James) This Great Northern Diver was only a few metres away from the causeway at Farmoor Reservoir, giving wonderful views. Unfortunately it dived frequently, moving further out, so I was only able to obtain a distant record shot.

Sunday, July 27, 2008

(James) Yellow-legged Gull at Farmoor reservoir.

(James) Garganey at Welney. Too distant for digiscoping, I used the hide camera and then took a photo of the screen! The result is rather pixelated...

Thursday, July 17, 2008

(James) Record shot of the male Red-backed Shrike at Sea Palling.

Thursday, May 22, 2008

(Simeon) Two shots of the male Red-Footed Falcon in fading light at Lakenheath RSPB on 16/5/08. The female was also present but it was harder to take photos of - it never stayed still and was often hawking over the reeds. See trip report for more...

(Simeon) Grey Wagtail at Denver Sluice.

Saturday, April 05, 2008

(Simeon) Goldfinch on the Nyger feeder in our garden. One of about 5 birds.

Monday, March 31, 2008

Glaucous Gull

(Connor) This Glaucous Gull showed well at Gorleston on a day out with J.G and S.G to the east of the county.

Monday, March 03, 2008

(James) From top: Brambling and Greenfinch, Brambling, Robin being fed by Nigel (Titchwell).

(James) Dodgy record shots of Water Pipit (Titchwell) and Ross' Goose (Holkham). I don't know why the Ross' Goose is glowing.

(James) Waders at Titchwell - from top: Ruff, Spotted Redshank and Knot.

(James) Goldfinch at Denver, taken through bins and double glazing.

(James) How to attract Blackbirds!

Monday, November 19, 2007

Sunday, November 18, 2007

(Simeon) A right "proper" Mallard and some Whooper Swans at Welney WWT 11/11/07

Sunday, November 04, 2007

(Simeon) Whooper Swans at Welney WWT and in fields nearby. Taken with Nokia N73 phone using 3.2 megapixal camera which has Zeiss optics! Well recomended...

Saturday, October 27, 2007

(Simeon) Hooded Crow at Loch of Clickimin on Shetland Mainland. This bird had a funny habit of playing with a glass bottle. It pushed it, pecked it and clawed at it even though nothing was in the bottle. Perhaps it was just having fun!

(James) Some record shots from recent trips: Curlew (Bressay), Killdeer (Pool of Virkie, Shetland), Snow Bunting (Titchwell), and extremely distant Common Cranes (Welney).

Saturday, October 06, 2007

Subalpine Warbler

(Connor) Dad recently had this Subalpine Warbler at Burnham Ovary Dunes.

Saturday, September 15, 2007

(James) Record shot of the lovely Wryneck at Thornham Point on 25th August, which was present with 2 Greenish Warblers. A brilliant day!

Squacco Heron

(Connor) While three of the Young Norfolk Birders were away in Wales (trip report coming soon), my dad took this photograph of the Squacco Heron at Earith Marshes, Cambs.

Saturday, August 25, 2007

(Simeon) Red-backed Shrike (Cley) and Wryneck (Thornham Point) on 25/8/07. Both cracking birds!

Sunday, July 22, 2007

(Simeon) I took these pictures of Little Egrets this morning whilst at Denver Sluice. There were three birds and they showed really well whilst fishing in the river. The tide was really low so there was loads of mud for them too. See the sightings for the other highlights... (22/7/07)

Monday, July 16, 2007

(Simeon) I took this photo of one of two Spotted Flycatchers nesting in our garden. Sadly, they have disappeared, but they may come back next year. I took the photo with James' Nikon as he had my camera with him on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition.

Sunday, July 01, 2007

(Simeon) I took these photos of a young Swallow at Welney today. There were three birds and I could get about 1/2 a metre away from them when they were standing on the rails by the hide. 1/7/07

Saturday, June 16, 2007

(James) Young buzzard being ringed in the nest! There were originally two... consult Springwatch's Heligan Barn Owls to find out where the other one went.

(James) Swallow and Barn Owl. Also taken on this trip was a similarly not-exactly-crystal shot of Grey Wagtail (breeding) - but I need to install photoshop so that I can crop the black circle off!

Saturday, June 02, 2007

(Simeon) Turtle Dove at Denver Sluice 1/2/07
Young Blue Tit at Whin Common 2/2/07
Male Blackcap at Whin Common 2/2/07

Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Red Backed Shrike

(Connor) Record shot, late evening, of the Red-backed Shrike at Holme Dunes.

Sunday, May 27, 2007

(Simeon) I took these pictures of Little Ringed Plovers at Welney WWT today. They're a bit blured because of the heavy rain 27/5/07

Wednesday, May 23, 2007

(Simeon) Male Blackbird and a Robin taken from my garden 23/5/07

Sunday, May 20, 2007

(Simeon) These were a few of my best photos taken at Welney WWT today. From the top; Grey Heron; a handsom adult, Moorhen; feeding young and Black-Headed Gull; on a nest. 20/5/07

Monday, May 14, 2007

(Connor) Now this is what you call a record shot! Two of six Dotterels just south of Choseley drying barns in the evening (14/5/07).

Sunday, May 13, 2007

(James) This seal on the bank at Denver Sluice was either extremely lazy or very ill. Unfortunately the latter seems more probable, as it would have been possible to go up and touch it.

(James) Wren disappearing into a bush at Denver Sluice...

Monday, May 07, 2007

(Connor) Wheatear and Tawny Owl at Holme NOA 7/5/07

Sunday, May 06, 2007

(Simeon) This lovely Whooper Swan has been at Denver Sluice for a few weeks now. It's plumage is fine and it isn't injured, but I don't know why it's still here. Any suggestions as to why it is, would be much appreciated. 6/5/07

(Simeon) This Great-Spotted Woodpecker was on the peanuts at Denver Observatory on 6/5/07

(Connor) This Iberian Chiffchaff showed well and regularly bursted into song at Colney on 29/4/07

(Connor) Some record shots of the stunning female Wilsons Phalarope at Grafham Water on 5/5/07

Saturday, April 28, 2007

(Simeon) This male sparrowhawk flew into the net with its dead prey (female chaffinch) at Snettisham Coastal Park this morning. The first shot, of the tail, shows 3 different generations of feathers as the bird had moulted some. By the way, both the Sparrowhawk and the female Chaffinch already had rings on them. 28/4/07 I ringed 2 Willow Warblers, 2 Greenfinch, 2 Linnet, 2 Lesser Whitethroats and a lovely Sedge Warbler. I also held the Sparrowhawk (brilliant)!

(Simeon) A record shot of a singing Sedge Warbler after I had finished the ringing at Snettisham Coastal Park 28/4/07

Wednesday, April 04, 2007

(Simeon) I finally managed to get an alright picture of one of the Chiffchaffs at Whin Common this morning! 4/4/07

Saturday, March 31, 2007

(Connor) Today myself and Simeon also watched this female Bullfinch being ringed at Snettisham Coastal Park.

(Connor) Today (31/3/07) myself and Simeon went to see the Red Breasted Geese at Snettisham RSPB. The birds showed well but distantly on a field south of the main RSPB pits. A Pale Bellied Brent Goose was also with the flock (cheers for that David!)

(Connor) This drake Green Winged Teal showed quite well at Titchwell RSPB on 30/3/07. Unfortunately it was very actively feeding and always had a strong sun back-light, making photography difficult.

Scotland Photos!

Here are some photos of Ptarmigan I (Connor) took while on my first trip to the Scottish Highlands, at Cairn Gorm. Full trip report coming (fairly) soon.

Tuesday, March 27, 2007

(Simeon) I took this picture of a Chiffchaff at Bates Wood this morning. I think it was preening. 27/3/07

(James) Record shot of the Twite at Thornham Point on 3rd March - the flock contained 38 birds in total.

Friday, March 09, 2007

(Connor) This Glacous Gull was present just east of Salthouse on 17/2/07.

Monday, February 19, 2007

(Simeon) Some pictures of the Swans at Welney WWT on 18/2/07

Monday, February 12, 2007

(Connor) These Waxwings at Holme NOA were a real surprise on 10/2/07 and showed well, a shame about the weather and light. The Lesser Yellowlegs (the middle picture) was reportedly still present on 10/2/07, the shot above was taken at the start of February.

Sunday, February 04, 2007

(James) Forgot to take my camera to Holme (actually I deliberately didn't, forgetting about the lesser yellowlegs!), so I took a shot with Simeon's camera instead.

(Simeon) A weird Cormorant with loads of white on the neck at Denver Sluice. Taken on 20/1/07. Probably partially albinistic, although southern cormorant subspecies do have a lot of white on the neck and breast. Any comments welcome - if you are not a member of blogger please email us at jimmyg777@hotmail.co.uk.

(Simeon) 3/2/07 Finally got a picture of the Lesser Yellowlegs at Thornham! Cracking bird!

Sunday, January 21, 2007

(Connor) Had another go at the Lesser Yellowlegs at Thornham this afternoon (20/1/07) and this was the best shot.

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Lesser Yellowlegs

(Connor) This Lesser Yellowlegs was a nice start to the year at Thornham Habour with 30 Twite as an added bonus.

Saturday, January 13, 2007

(James) Canada goose and male hawfinch (finally!) at Lynford Arboretum. The record shot of hawfinch (1 of 18 individuals present) isn't very good, but the blurring actually makes an interesting artistic effect this time!

(James) Stonechat at Denver Sluice and Kestrel taken in evening light.

Sunday, January 07, 2007

(James) Whooper swan at Welney - the swans come very close during the evening feed, but you need a fast shutter speed to get any results!

Saturday, January 06, 2007

(Simeon) At last! I've got a photo good enough to put on the website! There just hasn't been anything good enough to take... still, it's only a male Goosander - alright, I surpose! 6/1/07

Sunday, October 15, 2006

(James) Very dodgy shot of the whiskered tern at Titchwell. It didn't perch at all while we were there (except right at the back of the lagoon!) and it moved a bit too fast for me to get a decent photo, so I had to make do with a record shot.

(James) Two shots of the red-backed shrike at Stiffkey. Despite the bird being very close the wind made it quite difficult to get an absolutely crystal clear shot. The only one I got was just when the shrike turned away. Aaargghh!

Sunday, October 08, 2006

(Connor) This is a picture of a Yellow Legged type gull taken at Rutland Water sometime in August 2005. On looking back on the photo I believe the bird could be a Caspian Gull because of the dark-looking iris and the shade of yellow on the legs (quite pale), although there does seem to be quite a lot of red on the bill. Comments and opinions much appreciated.

Saturday, October 07, 2006

(Simeon) Here are seven pictures I took whilst on holiday in Wales and Shetland (diary entry on trip reports). From the top; Sumburgh Head and Lighthouse (Shetland), Meal Beach (Shetland), Herring Gull in Lerwick (Shetland), Eider in a bay in Lerwick (Shetland), Mallard at Leighton Moss RSPB (Lancashire) to show how close they came, the grey bar in the bottom right of the screen is my tripod leg! Red Deer at Leighton Moss RSPB (Lancashire) and a waterfall at Lake Vyrnwy RSPB (Wales) were we got Dipper!

(Matthew) Pied Wagtail on top of a hill in Scotland.

Saturday, September 02, 2006

(James) An absolutely cracking shot of a seemingly unafraid yet 100% wild red deer at RSPB Leighton Moss. This one I am really proud of, but I couldn't have done it without full cooperation from my friend (depicted).

(James) One of the daring mallards at RSPB Leighton Moss.

(James) Nuthatch on the peanuts in our garden.

(James) Not too brilliant shots of long billed dowitcher and woodchat shrike seen on the gibralter trip. However the dowitcher photo gives good size comparison between it and the similar plumaged black-tailed godwits.

(Simeon) Juv. Herring Gull on Shetland. See trip reports for my full diary entry on our holiday to Wales and Shetland!

(Simeon) A pretty poor shot of two Eider on Shetland. There were moulting flocks of up to 100+ at a time!

(Simeon) Mallard at Leighton Moss RSPB. Just to show how close they came, the bar in the bottom right corner is my tripod!

Friday, August 11, 2006

(Connor) A record shot of the Red Necked Phalarope at Titchwell RSPB. A nice bird that was unfortunately distant.

Woodchat Shrike at Friskney, Lincs. A super bird!

A record shot of the Long Billed Dowitcher at Gibraltar Point, Lincs.

(Simeon) Grey Heron at Welney WWT 8/8/06

Sunday, August 06, 2006

(Simeon) Another shot of the Woodchat Shrike that was on the perched on fence posts behind the sea wall one mile East of the village - Friskney. A super bird! 6/8/06

(Simeon) The Woodchat Shrike at Friskney near Gibraltar Point(see trip report).

Thursday, August 03, 2006

(Simeon) A beautiful Nuthatch on our peanuts. This photo was taken recently on 3/8/06.

(Simeon) This picture is of a Redshank desplaying to its mate. I took this photo at Cley NWT some time ago and I found it whilst lokking through old pics as well.

(Simeon) I found this picture of a Reed Warbler at Titchwell RSPB whilst looking at some old pictures.

(James) Wood sandpiper at Titchwell giving some of the best views I have seen, though it kept walking behind the two people in front of us!!

(James) Dodgy record shot of Arctic Skua at Titchwell.

Saturday, July 29, 2006

(Simeon) A beautiful photo of two Common Snipes outside Island Hide at Titchwell. 29/7/06

(Simeon) Yet again a poor record shot of a young Arctic Skua that was said to have come thirty metres from the main path at Titchwell. Nice to have one that isn't just a dark shape on the sea! 29/7/06

(Simeon) An alright shot of the Wood Sandpiper that came within ten metres of Island Hide at Titchwell. James' photos are much better though! 29/7/06

(Simeon) A poor record shot of the two Spoonbills at Titchwell. At least you can tell what they are! 29/7/06

Friday, July 14, 2006

(James) Reed warbler at Titchwell RSPB in the bushes near the first hide.

Wednesday, June 28, 2006

(James) Young grass snake at dersingham bog. It was moving pretty fast so I didn't manage to get all of it in!
We actually went to see the hoopoe (but failed as usual!), and this was the first snake I had ever seen so it brightened up the trip.

(James) A really cute baby house sparrow on our lawn!!!

Thursday, June 08, 2006

(Connor) A record shot of the Red Backed Shrike at Tithwell from Fen Hide. The bird did show well but unfortunately was very distant. Like the Hoopoe a one day bird (7/6/06).

Saturday, June 03, 2006

(Connor) A record shot of the Hoopoe at Dersingham Bog before camera battery died! An amazing bird, especially being on my local patch!

Friday, May 12, 2006

(James) Two true albino blackbird chicks at a friend's garden in Downham Market showed very well and were not at all timid.

Sunday, May 07, 2006

(Simeon) Two young, completely albino blackbirds proved very easy to photograph in a friends garden! 7/5/06

Sunday, April 30, 2006

(Connor) Two male Ring Ouzels in the fading light were a nice way to end the day at Holme Marsh.

Sunday, April 23, 2006

(James) Goldfinch in Denver garden, taken with Simeon's camera.

(Simeon) 23/4/06 Today I managed to get pictures of the Wrens but not the Robins, hopefully I will be able to soon. I targeted species I hadn't tried to get before so most of them are new. From the top; Wren, Starling, Chaffinch, Chaffinch, Blackbird.

Saturday, April 22, 2006

(Simeon) As I was unable to visit any bird reserves today, I resorted to a bit of Garden Bird Photography (GBP). From the top: House Sparrow, House Sparrow, Pheasant, Greenfinch, Greenfinch and Collared Dove.
A pair of Pheasants have been viviting our garden regularly. My next targets are Robin and Wren. Wren should be easy, as they are nesting outside our window!

Friday, April 21, 2006

(Simeon) One of the many decent shots of a Grey Squirrel in our garden. There are two of them and we have trained them to eat from the bird table instead of ripping apart our feeders!

(Simeon) A poor shot of the male Brambling that suddenly appeared in our garden this morning! 21/4/06

Tuesday, April 04, 2006

(Connor) A record shot of the Ring Ouzel seen at Minsmere RSPB opposite Island Mere hide.

(Connor) A record shot of Med. Gull at Minsmere RSPB, one of fourteen seen.

Sunday, March 26, 2006

(Connor) This Scaup was nice at Frieston Shore RSPB.

(Connor) This Tundra Bean Goose was a nice find at Frieston Shore RSPB on 11/3/06.

(Connor) This 'Pale Bellied' Brent Goose showed well at Gibraltar Point, shortly after seeing the Sora on 11/3/06. 'Pale Bellied' Brent Geese are far rarer than 'Dark Bellied' Brent Geese along the east coat.

Saturday, March 18, 2006

(Connor) Yellow Legged Gull at Dogsthorpe Star Pit. Unfortunately it was distant but this shot clearly shows ring on right leg. This is not a Caspian Gulls as first thought. (See comments.)

(Connor) This Yellow Legged Gull at Dogsthorpe Star Pit was unfortunately distant. The bird has a ring on one leg. This is not a Caspian Gull as first thought. (See Comments.)

(Matthew) Another Goldcrest.

(Matthew) Goldcrest right outside my kitchen window!! We think he was fighting his reflection!!

(Matthew) Tree Sparrow at Ouse Washes.

Saturday, March 04, 2006

(James) This tree sparrow at Ouse washes RSPB perched in a bush less than 2 metres away, giving me an excellent chance for a photo.

(James) Front and back view of a lapwing, and a record shot of the bean geese at Welney WWT.

(James) Some of the birds caught at Bates wood - 2 blue tits, robin, goldcrest and female chaffinch.

From the top: A beautiful Wren, a Robin being released, an amazing Goldcrest, a wonderful Dunnock, a Blue tit in one of the mist nets, a crumpled Blue tit being wieghed and a gorgeous Blue tit just longing to be set free.
All pictures taken at the Bates Wood ringing (18th-19th February 2006) by Simeon.

(Simeon)This was one of the 80+ Yellowhammers at Chosely Barns. There were also 125+ Corn Buntings and a Lapland Bunting. We recommend a visit if you've never been before!

Sunday, February 26, 2006

(Connor) Greylag Goose from the main hide at Welney WWT

Tuesday, February 21, 2006

(Simeon) Lapwings in flight. Thousands went up when the Peregrine appeared!

(Simeon) Unfortunately this was the best I could get of the adult Peregrine.

(Simeon) Another shot of the brave Pintail that came up to the hide during the 12:30 feed.

(Simeon) This was one of the Lapwings that landed on the island in front of the first hide.

Friday, February 17, 2006

(Simeon) This beautiful male Kestrel hovered outside yhe main observatory providing a chance for decent photos.

(Matthew) Shoveler at Titchwell.

Sunday, February 12, 2006

(James) Fieldfare at Denver (I found this picture whilst looking through my memory card photos).

(James) Whooper swan at Welney WWT (The brown mark on the neck is due to dirt on the observatory window, not a cancerous growth).

Sunday, January 29, 2006

(Simeon) One of the male Pintails bravely came righ up to the wheelbarrow during the feed at Welney on the 22nd.

(Simeon) A lot of the male Pochards posed nicely at Welney.

(Simeon) One of the Many Whooper Swans at Welney on the 22nd February.

(Simeon) Here are three lovely pictures of our resident Fieldfare.

(Matthew) Lapwing at Cley NWT

Wednesday, December 28, 2005

(James) Whooper swan at the evening feed at Welney WWT.

(James) Male and female goosanders near Denver sluice. I wanted a shot of them on the river, but stalking birds in the snow whilst wearing black clothing is not easy at the best of times, especially when standing on top of an embankment! Needless to say, they saw me before I got close enough, so this shot was the best I could do.

Tuesday, December 27, 2005

(Simeon) The regular Fieldfare that comes to our garden. We had two this day (27/12/05).

Saturday, December 24, 2005

(James) My four best pictures of the robins at Titchwell. They have become very tame, and even fed out of our hands, allowing us to get very close and take some very good photographs despite the bad light.
